Patmos Eastern celebrations, Chios & Lesbos (May 2024)
We caught a plane on March 18 to return to Terus and start our new season. When we went on
board Terus we found the boat in good shape, and that the winter had not harmed the boat. After
cleaning and applying a coat of antifouling, and some other maintenance jobs, we could put Terus
back in the water in April and sailed briefly to the public pontoon of Leros where we put the sails
back on, did some maintenance on the generator, and ran the water maker. Then, we even had
some bad weather, which forced us to stay in the private harbor of Lakki for a few days. In early
May, we moved to the island of Patmos which is well-known for its monastery. The 5th of May was
Easter Sunday and a lot of people celebrated this important religious festival. On Saturday
evening, a lot of people gather in the churches, but at midnight, when the priest declares the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, people light candles and move together to the meeting place where
they continue to pray. The celebrations end with fireworks and noisy firecrackers.
After the celebrations, we waited for a few days for good winds that could push us towards
Maratocampo, Chios and Lesbos. In Maratocampo we stayed for 3 days because another severe
storm from the south was active. In Lesbos we docked in the private marina of Mylène to resupply
the boat before sailing on to Turkey.
